CNN —For many in Denmark, Queen Margrethe II is the only monarch they’ve ever known. But on Sunday, a new era will get underway when she hands over to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. This means that she will be able to perform duties as head of state when both King Frederik or Crown Prince Christian are not able, such as if they were overseas. King Frederik X will rule alongside his Australian-born and hugely popular wife, Queen Mary – which will undoubtedly delight her proud admirers back home. “The story of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is one Australians have followed closely and hold dear to their hearts,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

In July this year, Semenya won an appeal which she had submitted to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to end the testosterone limits. Cameron Spencer/Getty ImagesIn a statement to CNN, World Athletics said it stood by its rules and research. “World Athletics has over a decade of research, directly from DSD athletes in our own sport, that show high testosterone levels do provide an unfair advantage in the female category,” World Athletics said. Semenya acknowledged the differences in her body but insisted DSD athletes did not have an unfair advantage in the sport. In the book, she said she was 18 when she first faced scrutiny from World Athletics, then known as the IAAF.

CNN —Australia’s Kaylee McKeown broke the women’s 50m backstroke world record on Friday to become the first person to simultaneously hold the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke world records. David Balogh/Getty ImagesMcKeown is the first Australian to hold the 50m backstroke world record since Sophie Edington set it in 2008. International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach gestures as he speaks during a news conference, ahead of the 141st IOC Session, in Mumbai, India, October 13, 2023. Elected in 2013, Bach is due to step down in 2025 in line with current Olympic Charter rules, following a first eight-year term and a second four-year one. Sunday's open declaration by IOC members followed speculation in recent months that Bach could potentially continue as president of the one of the most powerful bodies in global sports. Several other members also called on Bach to stay on and asked for a Charter change. Being a core author of this Olympic Charter drives me to be more loyal to this Olympic Charter," Bach said.

The American superstar won the individual all-around title at the world championships for the sixth time on Friday to become the most decorated gymnast in history. Biles' only blip came right at the end, as she was about to wrap up her floor routine. Biles, Jones and Andrade competed in the same rotation, kicking off their contest at vault. Andrade bounced out of bounds seconds before she wrapped up her floor routine, a fluffed last step that marred an otherwise brilliant display. Biles’ competition continues this weekend with the women’s vault and uneven bars finals on Saturday and the balance beam and floor exercise finals on Sunday.

Paris CNN —The French government has vowed action to “reassure and protect” the public as its capital Paris reports a “widespread” rise in bedbugs. She added there was an “escalation” in numbers because bedbugs were increasingly resistant to insecticides. French transport operators say they remain “vigilant” about bedbugs following reports of what were said to be sightings in public transport. In the videos, the bedbugs were said to be spotted on public transport and other public locations, such as cinemas. CNN —Russia as a country has no place at the 2024 Paris Olympics and no Russian flag should be used at next year’s Games, French President Emmanuel Macron said. Speaking to French sports newspaper l’Equipe, Macron added that discussions should be held about the participation of some Russian athletes who “may also be victims of this regime.”“Obviously, there can’t be a Russian flag at the Paris Olympic Games. Because Russia as a country has no place [at the Games] when it has committed war crimes and deported children,” Macron said Wednesday. So far, no decision has been taken on Russian and Belarusian athletes’ participation at the 2024 Olympics. “We are ready to boycott the Olympic Games in Paris if the Russian Federation and Belarus are allowed to participate in the competition,” Shmyhal said.

And the 40-year-old has a chance to add further records to her name as she leads Canada at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. From becoming Canada’s young-ever player when she made her debut aged 16 to arguably soccer’s greatest ever goal scorer, Sinclair has led quite the life. With this likely her last World Cup, she has one final opportunity to add ‘world champion’ to her long list of achievements. Sinclair dribbles against Sweden's Karolina Westberg during the semifinals of the 2003 Women's World Cup. The Canadians finished fourth at the 2003 World Cup – Sinclair scoring three goals along the way – as well as back-to-back bronze medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics Games.

CNN —Caster Semenya, the South African Olympic champion runner, has won her appeal which she had submitted to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to end “discriminatory” testosterone limits imposed on female athletes, the ECHR said on Tuesday. Semenya is hyperandrogenous – meaning she has naturally high levels of testosterone – and has been fighting against rules introduced in 2019 by World Athletics – track and field’s governing body – which regulates levels of the hormone in female athletes. A three-time 800m world champion, Semenya lost an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in April 2019. “The case was filed against the state of Switzerland, rather than World Athletics. It is difficult to estimate how many people have DSD traits – many live their entire lives without ever knowing they have one.

April 29 (Reuters) - Ukraine are at risk of losing quota places for Olympic weightlifting at the Paris 2024 Games after a third athlete was provisionally suspended due to an anti-doping rule violation, Inside The Games reported. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), which would decide on any such punishment, did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. By IWF rules an independent panel may withdraw quota places for both men and women if three sanctions are handed out for doping violations by athletes or others in one member federation within a 12-month period. Ukraine won eight medals at the recently concluded European Weightlifting Championships in Armenia, including two golds. The country has said it would boycott the Olympics Games if Russians and Belarusians are allowed to compete, even as neutrals, following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine last year.
